The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a memorandum of cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on June 9. The signing took place online between JICA President Akihiko Tanaka and ICRC President Miliana Spoliarich. On the 14th, JICA Vice President Junichi Yamada met with President Spoliarich at JICA Headquarters.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, JICA, together with the international community, has been providing various assistance to Ukraine and the countries surrounding Ukraine. The ICRC has deployed its personnel on the ground in conflict-affected and other countries, and has been carrying out assistance, protection, and prevention activities to protect people’s dignity and livelihoods, using its network of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in each country.
Under the partnership agreement concluded this time, both parties agreed to plan and implement seamless cooperation in conflict-affected countries, including Ukraine, from emergency assistance to reconstruction, taking advantage of JICA’s long-standing trust and expertise and the ICRC’s mobility in the field. Based on this collaboration agreement, JICA and the ICRC are considering cooperation in the field of logistics in conflict-affected countries, and plan to build a system that will enable prompt and reliable transport of materials and equipment to areas where there is a real need for them.
