The Shin-Kamigoto Town Tourism and Products Association will hold “Kamiagoto Airport Starry Sky Night Tour” on July 23, August 12, and October 14. This astronomical observation tour will allow visitors to view the starry sky of Kamiagoshima, one of the best in Japan, from the runway of the airport, which is normally inaccessible.
Located in the northern part of the Goto Archipelago, the westernmost island of Kyushu, the town of Shin-Kamigoto is close to nature and offers blue ocean and mountain scenery. Depending on the time of year, the town offers a spectacular view of the last sunset in Japan, and because it is surrounded by the sea and has little “light pollution,” it is said to have a wonderful starry sky that is highly regarded by starry sky professionals.
Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and can be made now via the dedicated reservation form on the website, by phone, or by mailing or faxing an application form. The fee is 3,000 yen for adults and 1,500 yen for elementary school students. Discounts are available upon presentation of an islanders’ card, and an experience coupon for the “Wakuwaku Boarding Pass,” which includes a round-trip ticket to the Goto Islands, Iki, and Tsushima, as well as a menu of local experiences.
For safety reasons, no valuables, cell phones, blue sheets, or other baggage are allowed on the runway. Preschool children are not allowed on the runway, but they can enjoy a guided tour of the runway through telescopes and other equipment in the parking lot.
