Stay at the World Heritage Gassho-Zukuri Village in Gokayama and experience roof thatching! I’ve seen the special plan that Airbnb is offering.

Stay overnight in a World Heritage site where you normally cannot stay. Connecting with Local People, History, and Culture This lodging experience was made possible with the cooperation of the Nanto City Tourism Association in Toyama Prefecture and the residents of Suganuma Gassho-Zukuri Village in Gokayama. The most important point of the program is that participants can stay overnight in the area, which no one has been able to experience for more than 20 years. The participants can learn about the traditions of the region and the village, and experience how culture is passed down from generation to generation. The plan includes a stay at the Nakajima family’s home, which operates the Gokayama Eatery Gorouhei in the village. This is a valuable experience, as the village is essentially made up of only human residences with no facilities for tourists to stay. Another point is that you can put yourself in a state of slight digital detox. You will be given a “Disconnect to Connect” kit at the site. This is a message from Airbnb that you should put down your phone once in a while and reconnect with nature and yourself.

Iwana sushi and bone wine. Gokayama is a treasure trove of gastronomic delights that will keep you coming back for more! Iwana (char) is one of the most popular gourmet foods in Gokayama. You can enjoy this specialty in the form of sushi at the “Gokayama Shunana Kobo Iwana” restaurant at “Roadside Station Kamidaira Sasarakan”. If you have the time, this is a must-visit place. The food is so delicious that not only tourists but also local residents go there, and it is a thriving restaurant with many regular customers. The “Iwana nigiri” served here is truly exquisite! Dip it in sweet soy sauce and enjoy the natural taste of iwana as it fills your mouth. Another Gokayama gourmet dish we would like to introduce is the “Gokayama Tofu Soba” at Gokayama Tofu and Teuchi Soba Kabensha, where you can enjoy two major specialties, Gokayama Tofu and soba noodles, at the same time. The hot, large pieces of deep-fried tofu are placed on top of the buckwheat noodles, and when you eat it, the tofu flavor spreads out. The soba noodles are ground in the morning, and the soba sauce has a light and gentle flavor.
