The new pizza box was introduced in April. It provides a time to enjoy the food even after eating it, and at the same time, it allows us to understand recycling in a natural way.
The park has adopted cutlery such as knives, forks, and spoons with a certain amount of biomass content or lightweight cutlery to reduce single-use plastic containers and packaging, and muddlers are also made of non-plastic. In addition, they switched to paper straws & lids starting in 2019. Many of you may be saying, “Oh, I used to use those naturally.”
One of the most fun things to do at Tokyo Disney Resort is mealtime. Pizza, hot dogs, one-hand menus and restaurants. There are a variety of restaurants where you can taste various menus, but have you ever paid attention to the packaging and cutlery?
The box of that pizza store, loved since the opening of the park, is now eco-friendly!
Captain Hook’s Galley in Fantasyland is a pizza specialty restaurant that has been popular for its “Bacon and Pineapple Pizza” (550 yen), which has delivered the same great taste since the park opened 40 years ago. The restaurant introduced a new pizza box on April 10.
At first glance, it looks like the usual material, but when you open it up, you will find an ingenious feature on the inside. In fact, a thin film is attached to the entire inner surface, which can be peeled off after eating for easy separation.
I actually tried it after eating the pizza, and the film peeled off smoothly and pleasantly, making it addictive and fun! If you let your kids try it, they will enjoy the pizza and the fun of peeling it off, as well as learning about recycling all at once.
By separating film and paper, the pizza box becomes a recyclable material (used paper)! After collecting the special trash cans, the cast members further separate them by hand. After collecting the special trash cans, the cast members manually separate them further and outsource the recycling to a specialized company.
Oriental Land, which operates the Tokyo Disney Resort, has set a 2030 KGI (Key Goal Achievement Indicator) of 80% recycling rate (73% achieved in 2021) in its “OLC GROUP SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022”.
Mr. Komukai of the Food Division told us, “This attempt aims to take “horizontal recycling” to the next level. The number of food packaging materials with the cardboard mark is quite limited, and we want to take advantage of its value as a resource. Currently, we only have one store that will be offering this service until March 31, 2024, but we hope to increase similar measures in the future while complying with the law and food safety.
In addition, the company will continue its efforts to reduce waste and actively promote thorough sorting and recycling.
