JR East/Tokai Shinkansen “Sujata Ice Cream (Zunda)” [Gourmet Outing] Shinkansen “Sujata Ice Cream (Zunda)” by East Japan Railway Company/Tokai Railway Company

Posted on 2023-07-16 by Editor in Chief

On July 1, JR East Service Creation (JRESC) and JR Tokai Passengers (JRCP) launched a new flavor of ice cream “Zunda” for use in Shinkansen trains. Priced at 400 yen, the product is limited to a period of about four months. I just had a chance to go to Osaka on the Tokaido Shinkansen, so I tried it.

The familiar hardness of the spoon is still there, and if you eat it with the included spoon, you will have to wait quite a while for it to dissolve. For those who are too impatient to wait, an aluminum spoon is also available, which I also purchased (700 yen).

Even with an aluminum spoon, it is too hard to take a very large scoop right after receiving it, but as it melts in the mouth because of its hardness, the zunda flavor flutters out through the nose. Despite my concerns about the bean ice cream, the flavor is not too assertive, yet it has a strong presence. The texture of the occasional rice cake is also good. I see, this is indeed Zunda. When it becomes soft, you can understand the zunda taste better if you put some chunks of it in your mouth.

It goes surprisingly well with hot coffee, so why not enjoy the temperature difference between the stiffly cold Zunda ice cream and the hot coffee in a moderately cool car this summer?
