The first time I visited an RV park, I went to RV Park Shichirigawa on the Boso Peninsula, and then I skipped over the Miura Peninsula to visit RV Park Chidori Marine Service in Osezaki, Numazu, on the western side of the Izu Peninsula.
There is no rule in this project that we must visit the peninsulas around Tokyo in that order, but after Boso and Izu, I wanted to visit the Miura Peninsula, so I looked for it and found “RV Park Light Star Forest Camp Hayama” (1431-1 Kamiyamaguchi, Hayama-cho, Miura-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture) that caught my attention.
I had searched for RV parks in Miura Peninsula some time ago, but there was no name then. This means that this is a newly registered facility, and there must not be much information among the RV parks yet. So, I decided to visit this one.
Star Forest Camp Hayama is operated by a construction company called Star Home and actually opened four years ago in 2019. Starhome has a large company site, and when the company considered how to utilize it, the suggestion was to create an RV site that could be used by campers.
So, first, we built a site that could accommodate four units, and since there were many users, we built a space for four more units a short distance away from the head office building, and now eight units can be used.
After a while, users asked if they could also stay overnight in tents, so the vacant lot was cleared and space was added for tents to stay overnight, and a wooden deck was built on a steep slope to take advantage of the terrain, allowing tents to be pitched there as well. And they joined the RV park in June 2023.
Rates are 5000 yen per car per night on weekdays (up to 5 persons). Weekends and holidays: 5,500 yen per car per night (up to 5 persons). Pets are charged at 500 yen per pet. If you come with a trailer, there is space to park a tow vehicle, which costs an additional 1,000 yen. Rental options include tables, chairs, and fire pits.
Check-in is self-service and starts at 2:00 pm. Check-out time is 11:00. Same-day reservations are possible if available. The hotel is unmanned at night, but an emergency phone line is available and surveillance cameras are in operation.
Star Home is a professional builder that also handles custom-built houses, so the facilities in the facility are made in-house.
Now for the main topic, the RV park. This facility has “RV Site A” in front of the building and “RV Site B” across the small hill, each for 4 vehicles, for a total of 8 vehicles, but you cannot reserve a spot in advance (except for some large vehicles), so check in early if you have something in mind.
RV Site A is located in the same space as the Starhome headquarters parking lot, so the surface is cleared with pavement and steel plates, the parking space is approximately 6 x 2.5 m, and each site has an attached wooden deck.
The wooden deck is 4.6 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, so it would be possible to put a table and chairs on it, as well as a tent (pegging is not allowed, so it would be possible to put it down).
The height of the wooden deck was approximately 20 cm, so when the N-VAN was parked just at the edge of the deck, the difference in height between the steps was reduced, making it easier to get in through the sliding doors.
While Nos. 1-3 are side by side, No. 4 is a little further away and faces a different direction, giving it the best vantage point at this facility. For this reason, the author initially thought about choosing No. 4, but actually decided against it. The reason was the parking space.
Each RV site can be entered into the parking space from the rear, but the rear of site 4 seems to be a little narrower than the other sites. When opening the tailgate, van-type vehicles (including N-VAN) that need space in the rear cannot open the tailgate because there is not enough clearance.
This would not be a problem for a hatchback or sedan, but in my N-VAN, I often open the tailgate to do something, and not being able to do so is inconvenient, so I decided to give up the use of site 4.
For this reason, if you want to use Site 4 with a van-type vehicle, we recommend that you load your luggage in such a way that you do not need to use the tailgate for loading/unloading or getting in/out of the van.
Next, we will introduce RV Site B. This site is located a short distance from the building where RV Site A is located, and the ground is compacted gravel. Therefore, many people use this site in a camping style by setting up tents or car-side tarps next to their cars.
Each space is about 6 meters long and 5 meters wide, so it would be possible to pitch a large tent next to the car, but the ground is firm, so I think you would need metal pegs to stick them in, and a hammer would be necessary as they seem to be reasonably difficult to hammer in.
Also, there are no restrooms or showers here, so you have to walk to the building (RV Site A) to use them, but it takes less than a minute to get to RV Site A, which is a common distance for outdoor facilities.
