The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for collaboration and cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) Fukuoka Headquarters for the Asia-Pacific region on July 7. The LOI was signed at JICA Shikoku in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, in the presence of UN-HABITAT Secretary General Maimunah Mohamed Sharif and JICA Executive Director Seiichi Onodera, and between UN-HABITAT Fukuoka Headquarters Acting Director Bruno Delcon and Keio Tanaka, Director, Social Infrastructure Department, in conjunction with the G7 Urban Ministers Meeting. This Letter of Intent is intended to strengthen the linkage between the UN-HABITAT 2020-2025 Strategic Plan and JICA’s Global Agenda for Urban and Regional Development in developing countries by achieving SDG Goals 6 (Bring safe water and toilets to the world), 9 (Create a foundation for industrial and technological innovation), 11 (Create livable cities), and 13 (Take concrete action on climate change) in accordance with the Global Agenda for Urban and Regional Development. The aim of the project is to strengthen the linkage between the UN-HABITAT 2020-2025 Strategic Plan and the JICA Global Agenda initiatives, which are the respective strategic documents of UN-HABITAT and JICA, with the aim of resolving these issues.
UN-HABITAT and JICA have been sharing information in the field to solve urban problems in the past, but based on this letter of intent, we will further deepen our collaborative relationship, respect the business strategies of both organizations, and utilize each other’s knowledge, human resources, networks, etc. to further promote efforts to achieve the SDGs. We will further promote initiatives to achieve the SDGs.
