Seminar Outline
JICA’s Sadako Ogata Peace and Development Institute has published the “Project History” series, a book series that looks back on JICA’s past projects and analyzes their trajectories and achievements. The 34th volume in this series, “Takakura Composting and JICA’s International Cooperation: The History of Takakura Composting, which began in Surabaya” is now available.
Although progress has been made in recycling recyclable waste, recycling of food waste has been slow. Behind the glorious economic growth, piles and piles of food waste often emit foul odors, causing serious environmental pollution and social unrest.
In the 20 years since its adoption by the Global Environment Fund of the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Organization (ERCO) in 2004 for a project to improve waste management in Surabaya, Indonesia, the Takakura composting system has been introduced in 63 countries. In fact, 63 countries have introduced the system. The development of the Takakura composting system in various countries can be attributed not only to the usefulness of Takakura composting, but also to training programs conducted in Japan, including by JICA Kyushu, and local dissemination activities by the JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.
This book is a compilation of Takakura’s enthusiastic and sometimes humorous activities that transformed a city overflowing with garbage into one overflowing with greenery. In this seminar commemorating the publication of this book, the author, Koji Takakura, will talk about why Takakura-style composting has spread on a global scale, and explore the current situation, challenges, and future prospects at the field level.
We look forward to your participation.
