Eight teachers from eight schools participated in an inspection tour of Hawaii for school excursions. They discovered the fun of Hawaii that goes beyond “resorts” and immersed themselves in the history and nature of the island! Part 2

Surprising? Adults were excited when they went to a learning spot in Hawaii.

Flight HA864 with the group of teachers finally arrived at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. They joined the team that had come from Kansai International Airport and Fukuoka Airport to start their trip to Hawaii.

Things to do in Hawaii include marine activities at Waikiki Beach, shopping at the large duty-free stores, and eating famous food such as steak and acai bowls. …… If you are a seasoned traveler, a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii to visit the World Heritage Site of Kilauea Volcano is also a popular choice.

On the other hand, school excursions focus on “living with local people” such as cross-cultural experiences and international exchanges, rather than “resort sightseeing” as in the case of school trips. In order to learn about the roots of these activities, we toured various facilities that exhibit the history and nature of Hawaii under the supervision of HTJ.

School excursions, which involve groups of 30 to 100 people at a time, are always beset by problems such as tardiness, forgotten items, illness, and traffic jams, whether in Japan or abroad.

With such risk-averse advice, the teachers who were to lead the tour on the day of the event headed for guided tours of Pearl Harbor, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, Kualoa Ranch, and the Waikiki Historic District.

Along the way, the teachers themselves will experience the local buses running in Honolulu using electronic money called “HOLO Card” (Suica in Japan), check out landmarks suitable for meeting places and commemorative photos, and a large food court that can accommodate groups, all in preparation for field work.

By expanding the scope of activities from the center of resort tourism, we were able to discover a different way to enjoy Hawaii.

Participants who had visited Hawaii several times said that there was still much they did not know, that it was fresh, that the adults were excited, and that the teachers learned more than they did.

Mr. Yoshi Sakanashi of HTJ says, “First of all, it is important for adults to experience the trip themselves. As Mr. Yoshimi Sakanashi of HTJ says, “First of all, it is important for adults to experience the trip themselves, so they can share the excitement of the trip with their children.” The key to success in school excursions is to bring back the lessons learned from the trip and apply them to prior learning.
