Jumbo Ferry’s Boat Trip is “Play, Rest, and Learn”. I visited Shodoshima on the new ship Aoi!

Posted on 2023-08-16 by Editor in Chief

Shodoshima 2-day/1-night Round Tour” by Ferry Aoi! It takes a little over three hours by ferry from Kobe Port. While you are relaxing on board, the Aoi will arrive at Sakate Port on Shodoshima Island. After this, Ao will continue to Takamatsu Higashi Port, so be prepared for a smooth disembarkation. A car rental service (J-Net Rent-a-Car Shodoshima Sakate Port) is available at Sakate Port, so those who wish to drive around the island are advised to make a reservation as early as possible. Of course, you can also board the ship by car from the beginning! Even without a car, you can take the “Shodoshima Olive Bus” to major sightseeing spots. Shodoshima has a lot to offer, so take your time and spend a night or two touring the island. The Aoi Sakate Port to Kobe Port departs at 3:15 p.m., so assuming you return the next day, you will have about 30 hours to spend on Shodoshima. Here are some of the places you should visit during your stay. What is the best way to view the unique scenery of Shodoshima? The sandy beach (Angel Road) leading to “Bentenjima” in the western part of the island emerges from the sea only twice a day at low tide. It is said to be a sacred place for lovers (……), where you can be happy if you cross the road hand in hand with your loved one. However, as far as I have seen in person, it seems that more people cross the road with their families and friends. The tourist guide page of the town of Tonosho has a “tide chart” showing the time of low tide, so it is a good idea to go a little earlier in the day and watch the sandy beach appear from the sea. If it is raining lightly, you can visit “Nakayama Senmaida” in the mountainous area in the center of the island. The view of the terraced rice paddies from the hillside becomes magical when the area is shrouded in fog. The terraced rice paddies are fed with famous water called “Yufune no Meisui” (famous water of Yufune), which produces excellent rice that is chewy and fluffy. At “Komame Shokudo” near the entrance to the terraced rice paddies, you can enjoy a “terraced rice field onigiri” set meal, which consists of a firm-sized rice ball and fish and vegetables from Shodoshima. Enjoy the activities! At “Shodoshima Olive Park,” a 15-minute drive from Sakate Port, the location set of the 2014 live-action film “The Witch’s Delivery Service” remains. At the Olive Memorial Museum on the premises, you can rent a replica of the “magic broom” (an ordinary broom with no magic power) that the main character Kiki used to ride on, and take a picture that makes it look like you are flying on the broom! According to the staff at the facility, the secret to taking pictures is to “take a series of pictures without flying too high and then select a good one later. The “Twenty-Four Eyes Film Village,” which recreates the world of the movie “Twenty-Four Eyes” (directed by Keisuke Kinoshita and released in 1954), offers a retro townscape that is different from everyday life. The “Cape Branch School,” which was actually used as a school building, is also located here, where you can enjoy playing teacher on the teaching tables or on stilts or unicycles. Enjoy Shodoshima’s “brewed gourmet food! Shodoshima’s mild climate is ideal for slowly aging soy sauce, sake, and other yeasts. Various brewing methods are used throughout the island. At the Shodoshima Sake Brewery (Forest Sake Brewery MORIKUNI Gallery), located not far from Sakate Port, visitors can experience a tasting of sake brewed slowly on the island. Of course, the company’s “Fluffy.” (junmai ginjo sake), “Uto. (Junmai Ginjo Sake) and “Uto” (Junmai Sake) from the company are also available for purchase. Visitors can also taste bread and sweets made with sake lees and yeast. At Marukin (under the Morita umbrella) and Kinryo, two of the island’s soy sauce producers, visitors can learn about the history of soy sauce brewing and taste soy sauce soft serve ice cream. At the Jumbo Ferry’s store, you can purchase small round soy sauce bottles from Kinryo, Marukin soy sauce crackers, and sake from the Shodoshima Sake Brewery, all of which would make great souvenirs. Learn about the geology of Shodoshima! Kankakei Gorge was formed by erosion of volcanic rocks created by volcanic activity about 13 million years ago, and has taken its current shape. The contrast between the rugged rocks and the bright red autumn leaves is spectacular! Take the ropeway to the observatory for a good view. Although Shodoshima is a remote island, about 26,000 people still live on the island. The area around Olive Town, a commercial complex, is so crowded in the evening that you may wonder, “Was this a remote island? In the evening, the area around Olive Town, a commercial complex, is so bustling that one may wonder, “Was this a remote island? Shodoshima is a remote island, but moderately urban, and offers a variety of ways to enjoy yourself. Many people visit Shodoshima several times a year for short trips, and the number of “semi-immigrants” who work remotely and occasionally work in the Kansai region is increasing. The jumbo ferry is extremely easy to use for short trips to Shodoshima and semi-immigration, and the new ship Aoi, which allows passengers to play, rest, and learn on board, will continue to be useful as a means of transportation to Shodoshima.
