Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Chiba, Saitama, and Sagamihara Cities will hold the 44th Joint Disaster Drill of Nine Prefectures and Cities in various locations from August to September. Sagamihara City will be the central venue for this year’s event, which will be larger in scale than in previous years in light of the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred in 1923.
Under the assumption that a magnitude 7 earthquake with an epicenter directly under the city has occurred, drills for information gathering, rescue, and lifeline restoration will be conducted. The drills will be broadcast live on the site’s vision screen, and there will also be a “Disaster Prevention Fair” with exhibits and hands-on activities for the general public.
The training is scheduled to take place on September 1 at Sagamihara Sports and Recreation Park and a portion of the Sagami General Supply Arsenal. On that day, the east-west road leading to the training site will be closed to vehicular traffic.
