JR East and JR West announced that the approximately 125-km extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen line from Kanazawa to Tsuruga will open on March 16, 2024. The “Kagayaki” and “Hakutaka” trains, which run directly from Tokyo to Tsuruga, will make 14 round trips per day.
The trains will consist of 12-car Series E7 and W7 trains, and will take 2 hours and 51 minutes from Tokyo to Fukui (36 minutes shorter), 3 hours and 8 minutes from Tokyo to Tsuruga (50 minutes shorter), 2 hours and 9 minutes from Osaka to Kanazawa (22 minutes shorter), 2 hours and 35 minutes from Osaka to Toyama (29 minutes shorter), and others.
In addition, the following limited express trains will cease operation with this opening.
Thunderbird” limited express train (Tsuruga to Kanazawa and Wakuraonsen)
Limited Express “Shirasagi” (Tsuruga to Kanazawa)
Express “Ohayou Express/Oyasumi Express” (between Tsuruga and Kanazawa)
Express “Dynastar” (Fukui to Kanazawa)
