What is the secret to solving the problems of space and cost of railroad construction? Self-propelled ropeway “Zippar,” which is about to be put into practical use, has been seen on an experimental line.

Posted on 2023-09-06 by Editor in Chief

The Zippar is a combination of the best of various types of railcars that can easily pass over congested highways and construct a route at will. We visited Zip Infrastructure, the developer of the Zippar, to see a prototype of the near-future Zippar railcar.

The Zippar is classified as a ropeway, since it moves through the air smoothly by holding onto two cables. Unlike ropeways, however, Zippar can make frequent stops at curves, making it a “quick ride” like a tram or bus. In addition, it can be constructed at a lower cost and in a shorter period of time than conventional railroads.

As of August, a new type of railroad, the Zippar, is under development at the Zip Infrastructure headquarters in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture, with the aim of commercializing it around 2025. The company is currently conducting a series of verification and running tests at Zip Infrastructure’s headquarters in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture, with the aim of commercialization around 2025.

Looks like a ropeway, but the drive is an EV? Three secrets of the Zippar self-propelled ropeway

The current Zippar prototype is compact, with seating for 12 passengers (six seats), but it can depart one after another at 12-second intervals, allowing it to transport up to 3,600 passengers per hour, a capacity similar to that of a regular train or monorail. The vehicle does not require an operator and can operate unmanned, which will greatly reduce labor costs once it opens for business.
