In the capital city of Dushanbe, President Tanaka met with President Rahmon and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mukhliddin and confirmed the importance of cooperation on “investment in people” and “quality of growth,” while touching on human resource development, infrastructure development, and cooperation in the water sector between the two countries blessed with water resources. They also expressed their intention to support industrial development to create jobs in rural areas in the future.
Chancellor Tanaka also delivered the JICA Chair Memorial Lecture at Tajik National University on “International Relations in Complex Crises,” which was attended by about 300 people, including professors and students of Tajik National University and diplomats of Tajikistan. On the same day, Tajik National University conferred an honorary doctorate to Chancellor Tanaka.
In addition, the participants witnessed the contract signing ceremony for the “Scholarship Program for Human Resources Development (JDS),” a program to accept young administrative officials as exchange students, and exchanged opinions with JDS graduates. Many of the graduates have gone on to hold important positions, including the first female minister. Other JDS participants visited the site of the Afghanistan Refugee Assistance Project, a project in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as well as other JICA projects in Tajikistan.
