The event was attended by Mr. Masaru Kataoka, President and Representative Director of Jetstar Japan, Mr. Kansuke Imazu, Mayor of Asahikawa, and Mr. Hideki Tomita, Managing Director of Hokkaido Airport. The new route will be the first in four years and four months, and the first after Corona.
The new service will begin on December 15, with two round-trip flights per day. The aircraft used will be an Airbus A320 (180 seats). One-way fares range from 5,990 yen to 38,190 yen (economy class Starter, payment and airport fees are not included).
On September 11, Jetstar Japan held a press conference in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, announcing the launch of a new route between Narita and Asahikawa.
The Narita-Asahikawa route is a “silky route” named after the quality of the snow.
Jetstar Japan President Kataoka, speaking at the press conference, emphasized that this is the first scheduled LCC flight between Asahikawa and Narita in Japan.
Based on our experience to date, it is important for the success of the route that the local community and the airline work together to increase demand. I am confident that we will be able to build a solid relationship with the local community through their positive and strong support.
In addition to the cooperation of the local community, Asahikawa’s abundance of tourism resources and its excellent location in the center of Hokkaido as a tourist base, as well as its conformity with the “Three Basic Policies of the Basic Plan for the Promotion of a Tourism Nation” were cited as reasons for opening the new Asahikawa route.
Using Australia and Southeast Asia as examples, the company promises to enhance promotion to international travelers in the future.
Japan is a very popular travel destination for Australians. In addition to Tokyo and Osaka, we would also like to focus on how to bring travelers to regional areas. Asahikawa is known for its silky snow, but it is still not as well known as other areas. In order to convey the charm of the Asahikawa/Kamikawa area to more international travelers, we have named it the “Silky Route” and will focus on promoting it to other countries.
To commemorate the new service, a sale will be held for round-trip bookings from Narita to Asahikawa, with the return flight priced at 98 yen. This sale will be held from 5:00 p.m. on September 12 to 5:00 p.m. on September 14, limited to 98 seats and days of the week. A one-way sale starting at 4,690 yen (polar bear) will be held at the same time.
Mayor Imazu then commented, “Today marks the opening of a new chapter in Asahikawa’s history. It is not just one route, but a change in the concept of using the airport,” he said. Asahikawa citizens will be able to easily travel not only to the Tokyo metropolitan area, but also to Kyushu, Osaka, Shikoku, and even overseas.
He added, “We believe that the service will be a catalyst for people, goods, and the economy of the Tohoku region, and that it will significantly change the flow of the economy. The start of Jetstar’s service is just the beginning. We sincerely welcome the long-awaited launch of Jetstar’s service to Asahikawa.
Hokkaido Airport Managing Director Tomita added, “This is the second new Jetstar service following New Chitose Airport. There are many attractive sightseeing areas around Asahikawa, such as zoos, ski resorts, Biei and Furano. We hope that Asahikawa Airport will help people feel the charms of Hokkaido even more. We believe that the increase in direct flights from Narita and the increased convenience will greatly contribute to the local economy. We would like to work together to boost Hokkaido as a whole.
