On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, a business plan contest using DX technology to contribute to Mongolia’s development challenges with the aim of promoting DX and developing ICT and digital engineering human resources in Mongolia and Japan (DXCUP2023: organized by the Mongolian Ministry of Education and Science, the Mongolian Federation of Technical Colleges, DX Mongolia, Science and Technology Fund, and JICA co-sponsors, supported by Japanese Deep Learning Association, National Institute of National Colleges of Technology, Gotanda Valley, etc.) was held in Ulaanbaatar.

A total of 40 teams from vocational training schools, Japanese-style technical colleges, universities, and other schools across Mongolia applied for the DXCUP 2023, and a total of 12 teams, 10 of which won the document screening by 16 experts and 2 teams from Japanese universities, participated in the final competition on June 6.

The winner was a team of students from the Mongolian National College of Technology, who proposed to develop an application that can visualize water conservation to address the issue of water shortage in Mongolia. The third place in this competition went to a team from the Mongolian National College of Technology attached to the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, which became the first Mongolian Japanese-style technical college team to participate in the finals of DCON2023, organized by the Japanese Deep Learning Association in April 2011. Other innovative proposals with the potential for reverse innovation to Japan included the “Aquaculture Project in the Gobi Desert,” proposed by Hokkaido University students as a solution to the world’s protein shortage and a measure against climate change, and the “Telephone Reservation Service Using AI Technology,” by university students from the Mongolian University of Science and Technology. There were many innovative proposals that could be reverse innovations to Japan.

From June 5 to 11, JICA sponsored an ICT business matching/study tour in Mongolia, and a total of 19 Japanese companies/organizations in the ICT and digital fields that participated in the tour visited the DXCUP2023 event on June 6. Many of the tour participants expressed their appreciation of the DXCUP, taking advantage of JICA’s connections with the field and stakeholders.
