In response to a request from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide emergency relief supplies for earthquake damage in western Afghanistan as follows.

Although the full extent of the damage is still unclear, the earthquake that struck Herat Province in western Afghanistan at around 11:00 a.m. on October 7 (morning) caused extensive human and property damage in the affected areas.
Damage as of October 9
Magnitude and depth: M6.3 (10 km depth)
Location: Zindah Jan District, Herat Province
Time of occurrence: 11:11 a.m. local time on July 7 (15:41 p.m. Japan time)
*Multiple M5-6 class aftershocks continued to occur after the above quake.

Death toll: 2,445 (Reuters, 9th)
More than 2,000 injured (Associated Press, 9th)
Affected 1.216 million (USGS 9th) to 1.86 million (EU/ECHO Flush 9th)
Collapsed houses: About 1,300 houses in 13 villages in 4 districts near the epicenter (IFRC, 8th)
Damage to infrastructure (roads, bridges, airports, communications, electricity, water, etc.)
Herat and Kabul airports are operational.
In the Injil area, some roads are impassable due to debris.
The area surrounding the epicenter is inherently fragile in terms of electricity, communications, water supply, and other infrastructure.
The road from Kabul to Herat is heavily damaged due to conflicts, etc., and it may take time for overland transportation.
