Grant Aid Gift Agreement for Afghanistan: Contributing to the Revitalization of Women’s Economic Activities through Support for Women-led Small and Micro Enterprises in Partnership with UNDP | News & Media

Posted on 2023-10-24 by Editor in Chief

On October 17, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for a grant assistance of up to 1,406 million yen for the “Women’s Economic Activity Enhancement Plan in the Private Sector” for Afghanistan. Signing Ceremony

More than two years after the August 2021 political upheaval, Afghanistan remains in the grip of an unprecedented economic and humanitarian crisis. Women, in particular, have been the majority of the unemployed since August 2021, and their limited access to education, mobility without the accompaniment of male relatives, and employment have left them in a difficult economic situation.

This project will provide small-scale infrastructure, equipment, improved access to finance, and training to women entrepreneurs and their small and micro enterprises to start or expand their businesses in seven provinces in Afghanistan where women’s economic activity is at a low level.

Through the above activities, the project aims to support 1,400 women entrepreneurs and 140 enterprises and create 4,800 jobs*. The project will also strengthen economic activities by women, thereby contributing to the improvement of women’s livelihoods and the sustainable and independent development of Afghanistan, and contribute to SDG Goal 1 (Eliminate poverty), Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality), and Goal 8 (Both job satisfaction and economic growth).

(Note: Total of 2,800 persons through assistance to small and micro enterprises and 2,000 persons through the Temporary Employment Program.

The details of the project are as follows
