Kokuyo and JR East Japan have started pre-ordering “memory pencils” and “pencil sharpeners” made from wood from the Takanawa Chikujiki embankment on the support purchase service Make.
The Takanawa Chikkyo is a railroad structure that supported the opening of the railroad in 1872, and was discovered during construction around the Takanawa Gateway Station in 2019. In order to hand down the wood to the future in a new form after the record preservation work by the Minato City Board of Education, we commercialized “memory pencils” and “pencil sharpeners” as tools for recording, communicating, and creating a link between the past and the future.
The “Memory Pencil,” which won the Grand Prix at the Kokuyo Design Awards in 2020, is produced one by one by hand from wood from the Takanawa Chikujiki embankment, which has lain dormant for more than 150 years, because the wood color when carved differs depending on the type, and the size and wood quality are not consistent. It is characterized by the bluish white pine piles and the gray body wood.
The “pencil sharpener” was developed in collaboration with “Nakajima Shigekido” to sharpen the hard wood of the Takanawa Chikujiki embankment, and uses body wood.
