On October 17, JR Tokai announced that all smoking rooms in Shinkansen trains (cars 3, 10, and 15) will be discontinued in spring 2024.
This is in light of the growing health promotion awareness and declining smoking rates in recent years. After the smoking rooms are abolished, emergency drinking water will be provided to strengthen the company’s ability to respond to disasters and other emergencies.
JR West has announced that smoking rooms in Sanyo Shinkansen trains and smoking corners at Shinkansen stations (Shin-Kurashiki, Shin-Omichi, Mihara, Higashi Hiroshima, Shin-Iwakuni, Tokuyama, Asa, and Shin-Shimonoseki stations) will be discontinued next spring, as will all smoking rooms in Kyushu Shinkansen trains.
