A hotel where you can enjoy a stay as if you were on board an English ship. The hotel is named after Anjin Miura, an English navigator associated with Ito. Anjin’s real name was William Adams, an Englishman who drifted ashore in Oita Prefecture during a voyage from Holland and later became a diplomatic advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1604, he began building Japan’s first Western-style sailing ship, and Ito was chosen as the site. Right in front of the hotel is the Anjin Memorial Park, which is decorated with objets d’art. The hotel is entered via a bridge reminiscent of a ship’s boarding bridge. Upon entering, you will see the front desk and a huge artwork made of old ship’s timbers next to it. It is interesting to look at it while imagining what part of the ship it was. Next to the spacious lobby, there is a store where you can buy original tea and shortbread. The travel library in the back offers a variety of teas and coffees. Herbs and tea leaves associated with Anjin Miura’s voyage routes are available, and guests can make their own original flavored tea by filling their own tea bags. The flavors change every hour, so I found myself coming back again and again. In addition, visitors can watch “Anjin Kikou,” a short movie that tells the story of Anjin’s life, as part of the Kai’s unique “Gotochi Raku” free experience program. The staff members provide commentary at various points in the movie, and I was engrossed in watching it for 15 minutes. In addition, Kai Anjin offers a free “Onsen Iroha” program in the lobby every evening, which teaches the benefits of hot springs, effective bathing methods, stretching, and more. Those who participate in this program will receive a free “hot spring stamp book,” which is usually sold for 300 yen.
Relax in an ocean-view room There are 45 rooms in total, all with ocean views, of course. This time we stayed in a twin room. You will receive a “boarding pass” to board the ship and check in with a cruise feeling. When you enter the room, the first thing that jumps out at you is the elaborate Japanese-style decorative latticework. Beyond the latticework, the ocean spreads out before you. Unfortunately, the day we visited was cloudy, but you can still enjoy this view from the window! You can make coffee in the pot provided and enjoy shortbread while leisurely looking out at the sea. …… It is as if you are enjoying a boat trip. The bed is “Fuwakumo Sleep,” an original piece of furniture from KAI. As the name suggests, it is fluffy and comfortable, and I had a good night’s sleep. Incidentally, there is a humidifier in the corner of the room. To the left and right of the washroom are a shower room and a toilet. In the bathroom, there were amenities wrapped in KAI brand original furoshiki (wrapping cloths). The furoshiki is different for each ryokan, and the one from Kai Anjin was a color reminiscent of the deep sea.
Enjoying an open-air bath with a spectacular view of the ocean The baths at KAI ANGIN are located on the top floor and include a large bath and an open-air bath. From the large baths, it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. I went in many times to watch the beautiful scenery change from morning sunrise to sunset. The view from the open-air baths is also beautiful. Kai Anjin is an alkaline simple spring. It is said to be so mildly stimulating that it is perfect for a child’s debut in a hot spring, so I was able to take a relaxing soak in the hot spring. In the changing room, there are basic cosmetics containing natural herbal medicines as amenities. I have sensitive skin and was able to use them without any problem. These products are also provided in the guest rooms.
Beer after a bath is the best! Soft drinks and popsicles are also available. One of the main attractions of Kai Anjin is the Sambiena Deck, a hot spring bathhouse on the top floor. The most prominent feature of KAI ANGIN is the top floor bathhouse and “Sanbiena Deck” where you can enjoy all-you-can-eat beer, soft drinks and popsicles for free after taking a bath! The beer is “India Pale Ale (IPA),” which was originally made using a large amount of hops to prevent spoilage during long voyages on ships, and is characterized by its high alcohol content. Many people were seen enjoying a beer after taking a bath or just relaxing and enjoying the view of the sea after checking in. Soft drinks include apple cider vinegar with rose hip and blackcurrant flavors to compensate for the lack of minerals during the voyage, and guricha, a specialty of Ito. These drinks are perfect for a warm body after taking a hot bath. The “San Buena Deck,” an open deck space where you can feel the sea breeze, was designed in the image of the deck of the “San Buenaventura,” a ship built by Anjin. It is a place where you can fully enjoy the feeling of a boat trip, and shows a different face depending on the time of day. The fireworks can be seen beautifully during the summer fireworks display, and this year a fireworks viewing plan has been on sale since April. The plan will be available again next year, so firework lovers should check it out. Please note that the serving time of alcoholic beverages and other beverages may vary depending on the season. Check with the front desk when you check in.
