Sao Paulo, Brazil is friendly to Asians! I enjoyed even a bullet sightseeing tour. I arrived at Guarulhos Airport late at night, so I called an Uber cab and headed to a hotel near the airport. Since I arrived late at night, I first thought about staying at a hotel directly connected to the airport, but the hotels directly connected to the airport were a bit expensive for me, so I stayed at a budget hotel near the airport. After a day of rest at the hotel, I headed to Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo in the morning the next day. The park is vast and has museums, cafes, and restaurants, so even in bad weather, it is enjoyable enough. However, the nature in Brazil is still amazing! I found trees I had never seen in Japan. After being healed by the plants in the park, we went to “Liberdade,” an Asian neighborhood in Sao Paulo, to have a late lunch. I was attracted by the Japanese anime-like appearance of a restaurant called “Cheu’s” and tried an interesting dish called “nori maki no fry” (fried norimaki). The rice is vinegared rice with teriyaki sauce on top. It may be an idea that we Japanese would not easily come up with. …… After taking a commemorative photo of the symbolic torii gate in Liberdade, we ordered yakisoba at “Eat asia-Hello kitty,” a restaurant with a festival-like atmosphere. It tasted more like Chinese-style yakisoba with starchy sauce than Japanese-style yakisoba with sauce. It had been a while since I had tasted Asian food, so I was filled with a sense of nostalgia. Although it was only one day of sightseeing, I spent a good time in Sao Paulo, a city with a large Japanese-American population, thinking about faraway Japan.
In Paris, days spent in touch with music and art From Guarulhos Airport in Brazil, I flew to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. This was my fourth stay in Paris, and this time I stayed three nights in a hostel I booked through Airbnb. I enjoyed visiting live music clubs at night and museums and walking around the city during the day. I went to a Jazz club called “Sunset” near the Chatelet metro station after receiving information from a friend. Sunside is on the first floor and Sunset is in the basement, and there are various jazz bands that perform every night. You can listen to the latest Jazz music in Paris with drinks. During the daytime, I mainly visited small museums that I had not been able to visit in my previous trips to Paris because I did not have enough time. Among them, the Montmartre Museum has many paintings related to the famous cabaret “Chanoir,” and as a chanson (French song) singer, I was very impressed by the many familiar works. A long-established chansonnier “Au Lapin Agile” is located near the Montmartre Museum. It is said that artists such as Renoir and Picasso spent enjoyable evenings at Au Lapin Agile. Not only do the singers sing old chansons, but also the audience sings along with them, and sometimes the audience is involved in the singing, making it a truly participatory entertainment. It is more aptly described as a “music bar” than a so-called concert or live performance. The dimly lit, mysterious interior was like stepping back in time to the 19th century.
