Saudi Pavilion at Expo ’70 Kansai, Osaka, linking the past with the future through traditional cityscapes and the latest technology

Posted on 2023-11-21 by Editor in Chief

On November 15, Saudi Arabia unveiled the design for the Saudi Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo.

According to Mr. Almazyad Osman, the pavilion director and representative of the government in the display area, the Saudi Pavilion will be a recreation of a traditional Saudi street, with each corner of the market offering a different experience of the country’s culture, cuisine, aromas, and plants. Visitors will be able to enjoy eating the country’s traditional food and experiencing calligraphy, which is similar to Japanese calligraphy.

Uniquely, the design is also environmentally friendly, with solar panels laid on the roof of the building to provide electricity, and rainwater is also used. In addition, the building itself can be taken apart and reused almost 100% elsewhere, he said. He hopes that people in Japan and around the world will learn about this aspect of his country, which, despite being an oil-producing country, is actively taking on the challenge of smart cities and other advanced, environmentally conscious initiatives.

The pavilion is being designed by Foster + Partners of the U.K. Details will be announced in due course.

At a dinner held in Osaka City on March 15, Hamed M. Faiz, Deputy Minister of Culture of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the Saudi Pavilion Executive Committee, noted that the year 2025, when the Expo will be held, will mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Japan in 1955. The two countries share a common cultural tradition, rooted in hospitality, tolerance, a sense of community, and a deep respect for others,” he said.

At the dinner party, Saudi Arabian dishes such as “Gursan” and “Jareesh” were served in French style, and the attendees were able to taste the cuisine of Saudi Arabia, which they do not have a chance to enjoy in Japan.
