MHI opened the Barra extension line from the Macau Light Rapid Transit (LRT) extension project on December 8, starting from the Taipa line, which opened in 2019, connecting Taipa Island, home to a cluster of resort hotels, to the Macau Peninsula in the central city area.
For the opening, a dedicated lane will be laid in the existing bridge connecting Taipa Island and the Macau Peninsula. One new station will be added, and the new line will cover a distance of 3.2 km.
As the number of tourists visiting Macau increases, the new route is expected to further improve transportation convenience and ease traffic congestion.
The Macau LRT uses the fully automated guideway transit (AGT) system, a new transportation system that runs fully automated and driven by electric power. The company has also been awarded a contract to develop the Shihbaewan Extension, which will connect the newly developed residential area of Shihbaewan, and the Yokqin Extension, which will extend to Yokqin Island, China, on the other side of the Macau coast.
