Ki no Koka Maekawa Architects will open “Kurasu Sauna Tsurugi” (185-1 Teramachi, Namekawa City, Toyama Prefecture), an accommodation facility limited to one couple per day, on February 1, 2024. Reservations for lodging will be accepted from the end of December.
Located in a location with a view of the Tateyama mountain range, including Tsurugidake, the sauna will be a combination of the main house “Hikari no Ie”, lounge, deck, and water bath under the concept of “the pleasure of living in a sauna”. The accommodation capacity is for 2 to 6 people, and is supervised by Kawachan (Mr. Naoki Kawada), a sauna producer authorized by the Finnish National Tourist Board.
The “sauna in the hanare” of approximately 100 tsubo (1,860 m2) will include a “Tsurugi sauna room” equipped with an authentic Finnish stove, a “pool water bath” using melted snow water from the Tateyama mountain range, a wooden deck for outdoor air bathing, and a lounge with a fireplace. Large glass windows throughout the building will provide a frame-like view of the original landscape of the Tsurugidake Mountains.
The approximately 150-square-meter, two-story “Kage-no-ie” is built using traditional wooden conventional-axis construction, and is equipped with a porch, living room with wood-burning stove, dining kitchen, bath, toilet, and bedroom. Many of the furniture and interior furnishings are products made in the region, allowing visitors to enjoy the sauna as if they were living in it, while at the same time experiencing the charm of the region’s history and culture.
