The 18th International Conference of the “Latin American Association of Researchers on Asia and Africa” (held every other year) was held in Costa Rica from Monday, November 20, 2023, bringing together approximately 200 university faculty and researchers who are conducting research on Japan and other Asian and African regions in the Latin American region.

This year, we took advantage of the conference to have Dr. Takayuki Itami (former president of International University of Japan) deliver a keynote lecture.

As part of the Japanese Studies Chair (JICA Chair) program, Dr. Itami is a lecturer on “Chapter 4: Economic Growth and Japanese-style Management,” a series of programs co-produced with the Open University of Japan Academy entitled “Understanding Japanese Modernization. It is expected that Dr. Itami’s lecture will generate further interest among university faculty and researchers in the Latin American region regarding Japan’s modern development experience and model, which differs from that of the West without compromising the traditions and identity of his country.

Information exchange meeting with JICA chair officials

The 18th General Meeting of the Latin American Association of Asian and African Studies will be held in Costa Rica, and we took this opportunity to encourage and support faculty members and researchers who are involved in promoting JICA chairs in Latin American countries to attend the conference. In addition to Dr. Itami’s lecture at the conference, a session was held for information sharing among JICA Chair faculty members from each country to exchange ideas and opinions on cooperation in Latin America, including case studies and future dispatch of lecturers to Latin America.

The meeting was attended by JICA chairs from nine countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Paraguay). Various ideas and proposals were presented and opinions were actively exchanged, including the formation of a regional network of faculty members in charge of teaching, the creation of a list of plans and proposals for courses and seminars for each JICA chair university, the establishment of a system for sharing information with other countries, the holding of workshops and intensive courses in the region and in Japan for outstanding students from each university, and the establishment of a website to promote the sharing of teaching materials and documents and JICA’s support for it. The meeting also served as a good opportunity to deepen cooperation among JICA members and to contribute to the promotion of intra-regional cooperation by JICA chairs in the future.
