Weathernews has enhanced the “Snowfall Radar” feature within its WeatherNews weather app.
The snow radar function allows users to check the snow coverage status from 36 hours ago to the present and the snow coverage forecast for the next 72 hours (24 hours in the free version) on a map every 3 hours. Since snow coverage areas are displayed in 1 km mesh detail, it can be used to determine the depth of snow coverage at frequently visited places such as home, work, and school, and along travel routes, as well as to prepare for and determine the timing of snow shoveling.
This update introduces a new snow accumulation analysis model that takes into account not only temperature, precipitation, snowfall, and solar radiation, but also the effects of snow quality and snow pressure, thereby improving snow depth prediction accuracy by up to 35% compared to previous models. In addition, the company is also correcting data based on users’ snowfall reports in order to more accurately grasp the actual conditions of snow accumulation.
