JR West announced that it will install QR readers at automatic ticket gates starting in April 2024 and introduce a service that allows passengers to use QR tickets such as excursion tickets in the second half of FY2024 or later.
Once introduced, passengers can purchase QR tickets using the “KANSAI MaaS” application provided by seven Kansai railroad operators, the “tabiwa by WESTER” sightseeing navigation system, or the QR service for inbound travelers, and simply hold their tickets over a ticket gate equipped with a QR reader.
The service will be available at 244 stations in the company’s Kinki region conventional lines, and QR readers will be installed at 211 stations with automatic ticket gates; at stations without QR readers, QR codes posted at the station can be used by scanning them with a smartphone.
