Contents

UNU-IAS Program Head Akio Takemoto shared the outcomes of the Think7 Japan Summit, explaining that the main challenge is the growing vulnerability and fixed disparities that could result from the social transformation caused by the rapid energy transition. In the panel discussion that followed, the panelists presented findings from Africa, Asia, and Europe, as well as the interconnections among the social drivers of the SDGs in various sectors, and JICA introduced JICA’s efforts to promote synergies between climate and the SDGs to strengthen climate change resilience in development and to look beyond the SDGs. He stressed the need to look beyond the SDGs. Many panelists shared the importance of aiming for synergies between climate change and sustainable development. They pointed out the importance of scientific research to provide evidence of synergies.

Many participants agreed on the importance of aiming for synergy between climate change and sustainable development. As the 2030 SDG anniversary approaches, input is expected for future discussions. JICA explained that developing countries agree to aim for synergies between climate change and sustainable development for transition. He explained that in addition to maximizing synergies, it is necessary to minimize trade-offs and consider biodiversity at the same time, and that he has created a matrix that organizes the correlation between the two. He introduced that the Philippines has been able to significantly reduce damage from recent disasters such as typhoons by providing comprehensive support for disaster management. He also commented to UNU/IAS that it would be beneficial for development agencies to present scientific evaluation indicators of synergies.
