Background and Objectives

The Pacific Climate Change Center (PCCC) works to build resilience in Pacific Island countries and regions by bringing together development partners and others The PCCC was established through a JICA grant and has supported the region for three years. The event provided an opportunity to (1) strengthen the functions and services of the PCCC, (2) promote knowledge exchange and cooperation on innovative solutions across the Pacific region, and (3) deepen understanding of mechanisms and partnerships to promote sustainable practices and climate change action.

Contents

This side event highlighted the importance of the PCCC’s role in building resilience in the Pacific Islands countries and region. The importance of long-term investment and support to ensure the sustainability of the Center’s efforts was discussed.

JICA described the support provided to the PCCC in cooperation with the Government of Samoa and SPREP. The construction of the PCCC through grant assistance was followed by a technical assistance project on climate change that strengthened the capacity of the PCCC’s training function. Currently, JICA is planning to implement the “Capacity Building Project on the Use of Innovative Solutions to Improve Climate Change Resilience in the Pacific” and transmitted its commitment to promote innovative climate change measures in the Pacific region and to enhance the capacity of the PCCC to promote public-private partnerships.
