Project Long Term Expert

Background and Objectives

Many REDD+ countries are currently working to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) by the December 31, 2024 deadline set by the UNFCCC COP for the preparation of their Biennial Technical Reports (BTR), including annexes on REDD+. The BTR is being prepared by the December 31, 2024 deadline set by the COP of the UNFCCC.

This event will focus on how Kenya and other countries are using satellite imagery to monitor their forests and present how they are using the results of their monitoring to inform forest management. Presenters will include representatives from governments, international organizations, academic institutions, and the private sector to share practical information to build a sound knowledge base for better forest monitoring and management and to contribute to global mitigation efforts.

Contents

This side event was held in the “Space Pavilion” and featured speakers from JICA’s forestry cooperating countries Brazil, Kenya, and Mozambique, as well as from JAXA, with whom JICA has long collaborated in forest monitoring. A panel discussion and question-and-answer session were held on Japan’s efforts to contribute to climate change mitigation, and on the operation of the forest alert system in the field.

In his opening remarks, the President of the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) noted that with JICA’s support, the Paris Agreement has led to the development of reference levels required for the implementation of REDD+ and the establishment of a National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS), and Mr. Mwangi, KFS Geodatabase Manager, mentioned the current SFS-CORECC project to develop a tree cover monitoring system and to improve the NFMS for better forest management, including a forest traceability system and forest ecosystem services.
