This side event was held at the “Kenya Pavilion” and included knowledge sharing on satellite-based forest warning systems by countries and institutions, including the private sector and NGOs. The event also showcased how the National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS) and other on-the-ground monitoring activities are helping to implement forest policies; George Tarus, Director of Forest Conservation at MECCF, presented on Kenya’s National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Program; and the Kenya Forestry Commission (KFEC) presented on the Kenyan National Forestry Policy and the Kenyan National Forestry Policy and the Kenyan National Forestry Policy.
Various good practices and success stories were shared among the presenters and panel participants. During the event, the activities of the SFS-CORECC project were highlighted, with KFS President Alexander Lemarkoko describing Kenya’s 15 billion tree planting program and the importance of the project’s development of tree cover monitoring methods; Mwangi described improvements in forest warning systems and NFMS, and Atemo of MECCF presented the tree planting and monitoring activities by students in the School Feeding and Tree Growing Club Forest Carbon Pilot Project, presenting non-carbon benefits such as improved scientific knowledge and nutrition for children. The event contributed to raising awareness of JICA projects in Kenya and abroad.
