Background and Objectives

Kenya has a diverse range of natural resources and enjoys the benefits of these resources. However, the degradation of natural resources due to climate change in recent years has caused various problems, and financial and institutional strengthening is required to resolve them. Kenya is promoting a public-private initiative to plant and grow 15 billion trees by 2032.

The event will highlight best practices for landscape and ecosystem restoration efforts in Kenya, describe access to finance for further efforts, and discuss ways to attract development partners and private sector investment.

Contents

This side event was held at the Kenya Pavilion, where the Kenyan Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry and the World Bank called on the audience to mobilize funds for “Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Initiatives” and the UNFCCC gave an overview of the current status of REDD+. During the event, Sakaguchi thanked JICA for its collaboration with Kenya in the areas of policy and technology development, including the ongoing SFS-CORECC project, and noted that the results of the project, including the breeding of tree species adapted to arid regions, will be used in Kenya’s ongoing 15 billion tree campaign. He also noted that Kenya is playing an important role as a regional leader by utilizing the results of the project, including the breeding of tree species adapted to arid regions, for the 15 billion tree campaign currently underway in Kenya, and expanding the project to regional cooperation in Africa. Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests Tuya reiterated his appreciation for the technical cooperation of JICA and other development partners in the forestry sector, and this side event contributed to raising awareness of the project both nationally and internationally.
