The outbound flight, JL006, departs Haneda at 11:05 a.m. and arrives in New York at 10:00 a.m., taking 12 hours and 55 minutes.
On January 24, JAL introduced the new Airbus A350-1000 on its Haneda-New York route (JL005/006). I had the opportunity to board the first flight in Business Class, and this report describes the itinerary.
JAL’s first ever private business class cabin offers a high level of privacy with an outstanding sense of enclosure.
Details of the seat itself were introduced when the aircraft was unveiled to the public for the first time in the world, but the most notable feature is that it is now a private cabin type seat. The wall height is approximately 132 cm, which is 10 cm higher than the private business class seats of other airlines. At the same time, the airline is committed to “ensuring that passengers are not isolated” by making full use of digital signs in front of the door.
Another obvious difference is the cabin construction. The overhead luggage racks in the center row have been removed (the window rows on the left and right are equipped with them), giving the passengers a good view of the entire cabin and a truly open feeling. This design also contributes to the policy of not isolating passengers.
There are no luggage racks, so what about the luggage of passengers in the center row? The private room has a foot space that fits a full carry-on suitcase, as well as a dedicated wardrobe/shoe box with a sliding door for storing clothes on hangers (all business class seats). A typical amount of luggage should be completed in the private room. In addition, there are accessory compartments by the reading light and around the power supply, providing plenty of storage space.
The seat width is approximately 56 cm, and the bed length in flat mode is approximately 10 cm longer than before, up to approximately 198 cm. JAL hopes that passengers will try the combination with the newly adopted bed pad, which is superior in moisture absorption and quick-drying properties.
As business class is now a private cabin, relaxing clothes can be rented like in first class (they are already placed on your seat when you board). The one-size-fits-all, below-the-knee pullover type garments can be worn over current clothes, and the original clothes can be removed inside the garment. The material used is a pile fabric made by towel manufacturer Uchino, which is soft and comfortable against the skin.
I actually tried lying down with the seat mode flat, with a moisture absorbing quick-drying bed pad, and with my suit off and wearing relaxing clothes, and without exaggeration, I felt, “I can sleep like crazy!” I felt it.
The effect of changing into relaxing clothes seemed to be significant, and I was impressed by how much more relaxed I felt when I untied my body (or, more directly, took off my pants). This is probably one of the strengths of the private room type, where it is easy to change in one’s own seat.
When lying down, I was again surprised by the height of the ceiling, partly because the reporter’s seat was in the center row. The impression of the width (approx. 56 cm) may vary depending on the user’s physique, but for me personally (178 cm, skinny build), the space felt enveloping and relaxing.
Incidentally, if you simply lay it flat, your head will feel too low even with pillows, in which case you can adjust it better by using a switch that lifts only the headrest part.
A more detailed version of the report on this boarding will be published soon.
