For the 22nd and final session of FY2024, we will have Ms. Junko Niimi, representative of Tradin’ Care, a public interest incorporated association working on community-based multicultural activities in Takahama City, Aichi Prefecture, and Ms. Martín Shinzen, a second-generation Japanese American from Argentina who is participating in the organization’s multicultural activities.
Takahama City has the highest percentage of foreign residents among the total population in Aichi Prefecture, at 9.19% (compared to 3.70% in Nagoya). Ms. Niimi, a native of Takahama City, has set “creating people who live and work together in the community” as one of her organization’s visions, and supports the coexistence of foreign residents who work and live in Japan and local residents. This seminar will focus on the “buddy/ buddy family” system, which plays an important role in the organization’s activities. The word “buddy” directly translates to “buddy. Local residents and foreign residents are making various efforts to live together in the community. We will talk with Ms. Niimi about the impetus for these activities, the background behind the start of the program in Takahama City, how the foreign residents lead their lives through the support, and whether there have been any changes in the local community. We will also talk with Ms. Martín, who has been in Japan for over 30 years and now participates in the activities of the organization as a buddy, including her life story. This seminar is scattered with hints for multiculturalism that you can start today. Why don’t we take the first step? We look forward to your participation.
