On February 16, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the three NEXCO companies announced that they will conduct a social experiment of the Commuter Pass on expressways in six prefectures in Japan (Hokkaido, Niigata, Yamanashi, Ishikawa, Kagawa, and Nagasaki prefectures).
The Commuter Pass offers up to five discounts on designated sections regardless of the day of the week or time of day, and is valid from April 1 to March 31, 2025, for mini cars and standard-sized cars equipped with ETC.
The social experiment is already underway in Ishikawa Prefecture from April 2023, and will be expanded to six prefectures including Hokkaido, Niigata, Yamanashi, Kagawa, and Nagasaki prefectures from April 2024.
The commuter pass requires prior application for vehicle type and section, and detailed sales prices and other details will be announced at a later date.
