NEXCO Central Japan will conduct a campaign offering free coffee at some SA/PAs on the Tomei Expressway and other highways. The campaign will run from February 19 to March 19, and coffee will be offered from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. each day.
This is a new initiative to prevent accidents involving fatalities due to falling asleep at the wheel late at night, and is aimed at verifying the direct effects on drivers who stop at SA/PAs by offering them free coffee and a short nap (about 15 minutes). The project will be based on the case study of the Italian highway Autostrade.
Coffee will be available at convenience stores in each area, with a limit of one cup per person per day. To receive the coffee, users will need to install the “Wakuwaku Highway” smartphone app (Android/iOS version), and a questionnaire survey will be conducted at the same time.
