On February 20, a ceremony was held in Hyderabad, Telangana State, Republic of India (“India”) to celebrate the completion of the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (“IITH”), which was developed under the “Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad Project (Phase 1)” and “Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad Project (Phase 2),” a yen loan project. The ceremony was held in a hybrid online format, with Prime Minister Modi attending online from the Indian side, and a number of local project officials in attendance to celebrate the completion of the project. JICA Executive Director Imoto, who attended the ceremony online, expressed his gratitude for the deepening relationship between Japan and IITH since 2007, and noted that JICA will continue to work with IITH as its closest friend.
The history of Japan-India cooperation on IITH dates back to August 2007, when former Prime Minister Abe and then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh agreed to support the school at a Japan-India summit meeting. Since the school opened in 2008, it has been essential to improve and expand the school’s campus facilities in order to promote technological innovation in the country and educate the country’s industry-leading knowledge and skills.
JICA supported the construction of campus facilities and procurement of research equipment through the “Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad Campus Development Project” loan, a yen loan project signed between the governments of Japan and India in 2014, contributing to the establishment of approximately 20 buildings at IITH, and these facilities were completed on February 20.
Of the approximately 20 facilities supported by the yen loan project, six (Student Hall, International Conference Hall, Business Incubation Center, International House, General Research Center, and Central Library) were designed by experts from the University of Tokyo (at the time) under the JICA technical cooperation project “IITH Campus Design Support Project. On February 21, the day after the ceremony, the JICA Chair, a program designed to expand opportunities for learning about Japan’s development experience outside of Japan, was held at the school, and three experts involved in the campus design gave a special lecture.
In the lecture, in addition to the history of architecture in Japan, he gave a passionate message to IITH students about his thoughts and intentions in designing the IITH campus (for example, the egg-shaped design of the “Integrated Research Center” with the latest experimental facilities and equipment should be a place for hatching “eggs” of researchers who will lead India’s future). The students were impressed by the design and the quality of the facilities and the design of the campus.
