Singapore Airlines announced on March 15 that it will renew its Premium Economy Class service starting from the next summer schedule (March 31, 2024), the first major renewal since the introduction of Pre-Eco in 2015. The new airline will offer more luxurious in-flight meals and ethical amenities on flights to more than 30 destinations worldwide (including Haneda and Narita in Japan).
In conjunction with this event, an unveiling event was held at the SATS In-Flight Catering Center (SATS headquarters and factory that manufactures and manages 600,000 meals per day) located next to Changi International Airport. The new service was explained to the media gathered from the U.S., Europe, India, Asia, and other countries.
Mr. Yeoh Pee Teck, Senior Vice President (Customer Experience), Singapore Airlines, said, “Premium Economy Class is very popular with our customers because of its spacious and comfortable personal space and a wide variety of meal options to suit their preferences. However, we have not stopped to evolve, and have regularly collected feedback from our passengers, conducted market research, and researched the values and desires that travelers seek in-flight. We believe that our customers will be pleased with this major renewal,” he presented.
They hope to continue to provide a “personalized, world-class in-flight experience” that is unique to Singapore, a multi-ethnic country.
In the evolved Premium Economy Class, a glass of “Charles de Cazanove Brut Tradition NV” champagne is first served immediately after takeoff. This enhances the sense of anticipation for the flight ahead. The meals, which vary by city and season (one to three depending on the route), are served on custom-made porcelain that is both luxurious and eco-friendly. The meals will be served on full-size trays, beautifully set up, and will replace plastic disposable tableware and cutlery.
As part of the expansion of in-flight meals, the airline is also developing more than 200 new appetizers, main dishes, breads, and desserts. The upgraded bread service, for example, now includes croissants for breakfast and garlic bread rolls for lunch and dinner.
New appetizers include Garlic Roasted Shrimp with Smoked Aioli, Patatas Bravas (Spanish Fries), Broccoli Salad with Hot Smoked Salmon, and Seasonal Japanese Cold Noodles with Soba Soup.
The main dish lineup includes “Bak Chow Mein” (minced pork noodles), a typical Singaporean dish; “Beef Bourguignon,” a French dish with bacon, mushrooms, vegetables, and potato gratin; “Thai-style Crab Curry,” a combination of jasmine rice and brown rice; seasonal vegetables and eggs; and more. The lineup includes “Beef Bourguignon,” a French dish with bacon, mushrooms, vegetables, and potato gratin; “Thai-style Crab Curry,” a combination of jasmine rice and brown rice; and seasonal vegetables and eggs.
In addition, Premium Economy Class passengers will continue to enjoy the “Book the Cook” service as a meal option. This service allows passengers to enjoy special gourmet meals that are not listed on the in-flight menu by pre-selecting them via the Singapore Airlines app or other means at least 24 hours prior to boarding.
The Book the Cook menu on the Haneda-Singapore route, for example, features Western dishes such as “Beef Steak with Red Wine Sauce, Seasonal Fresh Vegetables and Baked Potato Cheese” and “Pancakes with Berry Compote, Scrambled Eggs, Bacon and Pork Sausage”; and Japanese dishes such as “Meat Curry with turmeric rice, vegetables, and pickled radish”; “Japanese fried noodles with vegetables topped with seared shrimp, scallops, and salmon fillets with red ginger and nori powder”; “Ginger-grilled pork with seasonal vegetables and bamboo shoot rice”; and “Eel bowl with seasoned rice, egg roll, and edamame.
For ethnic cuisine, there is a wide variety, including “Seafood Hokkien Mee,” “Singapore Chicken Rice,” “Nasi Lemak,” “Seafood Ho Fun,” and “Chicken Biryani.
In addition, the “Book the Cook” menu alone has expanded to include up to 20 options, including plant-based wellness dishes such as slow-cooked lamb ragout, salmon in teriyaki sauce, and mushroom and eggplant meatballs.
In addition, the Premium Economy Class meal includes a sumptuous dessert and crackers, and of course, during the flight, you will receive a selection of wines and other drinks, snacks, light meals, and chocolates.
The amenities provided in each seat on board the aircraft have also been reborn. The company has partnered with Out of the Woods, an American brand that produces environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle products, to develop a new amenity kit for Premium Economy Class customers.
The amenity pouch is made of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified kraft paper fabric and contains eye shades and slippers made of recycled PET material and lip balm packaged in biodegradable material. Bath amenities such as toothpaste sets, body care and moisturizers will continue to be available in the washrooms, and those under 12 will receive exclusive Disney items for kids.
Other Premium Economy Class privileges include priority check-in and boarding at dedicated counters on the ground, a checked baggage allowance of 35 kg (KrisFlyer Elite Gold and Star Alliance Gold members have an additional 20 kg, and PPS Club members have an additional 35 kg for a maximum of 70 kg). Checked baggage is provided with a priority tag to ensure smooth baggage collection upon arrival.
Of the Japan routes (Haneda/Narita/Kansai/Centrair/Fukuoka), Premium Economy Class is available only on the Haneda/Narita – Singapore route. The aircraft used is a Boeing 777-300ER with a total of 264 seats in a four-class configuration. Premium Economy Class has a total of 28 seats in a 2-4-2 configuration, with a width of 18.5 inches, a seat pitch of 38 inches, and the ability to recline at a maximum tilt of 125 degrees for an almost bed-like sleeping experience.
The ergonomically designed seats are finished in luxurious full leather and feature a headrest that can be adjusted in angle and height, a large cushion and blanket, a leg rest, and a foot rest.
Other features include a reading light at each seat, a cocktail table, space for water bottles, smartphones, and other personal items, universal AC power, two USB charging ports, and a 13.3-inch full HD monitor. In-flight entertainment is also available, with active noise-canceling headphones that allow passengers to enjoy games, music, and more than 400 movies in multiple languages.
Singapore Airlines is also offering KrisFlyer members traveling in Premium Economy Class the benefit of unlimited free Wi-Fi access from July 2023 onward.
