While the mining industry supports the Mongolian economy, with mineral products accounting for more than 80% of Mongolia’s export products, the country’s over-dependence on mineral resources has created a need for industrial diversification, including manufacturing and processing. Therefore, support is needed to promote manufacturing industries targeting livestock and agricultural products, as well as to promote business management, technology introduction, and technological improvement for small, medium, and micro enterprises.
Against this background, JICA, the Mongolian government, the Mongolian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Mongolian-Japanese Human Resources Development Center supported the Mongolian booth – Mongolian Pavilion – at FOODEX JAPAN 2024 held from March 5 to 8, 2024. The Mongolian Pavilion was supported by the Mongolia-Japan Human Resources Development Center.
FOODEX JAPAN is one of the largest food and beverage exhibitions in Asia, where various players in the food industry gather to exchange information and conduct business transactions. JICA provided technical assistance to Mongolian companies for exhibition, business meetings, marketing, and export operations. JICA provided Mongolian companies with technical support for exhibition, business negotiations, marketing, and export operations. On March 5, from 1400-1440, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to Japan Bayarsaikhan, Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency of Mongolia Erdene Saihan, and JICA Business Exchange Support Specialist Isao Nakamura spoke on the theme of “Rediscovering Mongolia, a Nature Powerhouse You Have Missed”, A Mongolia seminar titled “Rediscovering Mongolian Foodstuffs You Missed” was also held.
The five companies that participated in FOODEX JAPAN 2024 on the occasion of this year’s exhibition gave positive feedbacks such as “We were able to provide samples to not only trading companies but also to various clients such as supermarkets and restaurants, which expanded the possibility of direct export”, “We had business meetings with companies from China and Korea in addition to Japan”, “By actually coming to Japan We were able to have business meetings with Chinese and Korean companies as well as Japanese companies,” “By actually coming to Japan, we were able to better understand the market,” etc.
On the other hand, Hideo Kato, a member of the JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, and Mizuki Dohi, a member of the Mongolian Small and Medium Enterprise Agency, who participated in the Mongolian Pavilion as project managers, identified three major challenges to exporting Mongolian products. In addition, both squad members are,
It is difficult to open the door to the Japanese market simply by exhibiting at FOODEX JAPAN as a one-off event. If you are serious about developing the Japanese market, understanding the Japanese language and business practices is a prerequisite, but you must also have a long-term perspective and a strong commitment to [developing the Japanese market].

JICA will continue to support the promotion of business exchange between Mongolian and Japanese private companies through participation in FOODEX JAPAN and other exhibitions.
