Iide Town, Yamagata Prefecture, has announced various event and gourmet information regarding the submerged forest of Lake Shirakawa, a spectacular spot that will soon be open for GW and cherry blossom season.
The submerged forests of Lake Shirakawa can only be seen for two months in spring at Lake Shirakawa in the town of Iide in southern Yamagata Prefecture. In late May, the water level drops for rice planting, and the forest returns to its normal appearance.
The submerged forests of Shirakawa Lake are thought to have existed at least 30 years ago, after the completion of the Shirakawa Dam in 1981, but they have gained attention in the last five years through the spread on social networking sites, especially Instagram, and mass media coverage.
On the lakeshore is Shirakawa Lakeside Park, where visitors can enjoy the sight of submerged forests and canoe tours are offered daily. A campground is also located here, attracting many tourists for outdoor activities and photography.
