Three NEXCO companies and JB Honsha Expressway to continue toll levels on expressways until March 2034.

Posted on 2024-03-282024-04-23 by Editor in Chief

On March 27, the three NEXCO companies and JB Honsha Kosoku announced that they will continue toll levels for 10 years (until March 31, 2034) for regular sections, sections near large cities, and special sections such as strait areas.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s “Basic Policy on New Expressway Tolls,” revised on December 22, 2023, states that the three toll levels will continue and that the toll level reductions will target ETC vehicles.

The “Basic Policy on New Expressway Tolls” states that, of the toll discounts reorganized in 2014, those introduced to promote lifestyle measures and tourism had a certain effect, but that there were problems such as vehicles waiting on the road during the discounted hours and congestion during certain hours and days when discounts are offered. Therefore, further review is underway.

Under the basic policy for the period from April 2014 to March 2024, the basic toll rate for the standard section will be 24.6 yen/km (standard car), while the rates for the six expensive sections (Kanetsu Tunnel, Enayama Tunnel, Hida Tunnel, Hanwa Expressway Kainan to Arita, Hiroshima-Iwakuni Road, and Kanmon Bridge) and the overland section of Honshihon Expressway will be reduced to the same level as the standard section. The Tokyo Bay Aqualine and Honshi-Yamagata Kaikyo Kaikyo sections will be reduced based on the standard rate of 108.1 yen/km (standard car) on the Ise Bay Highway for special sections such as strait sections.

According to the March 27 announcement by the four expressway companies, the level will continue through March 2024 and continue for the next 10 years (through March 31, 2034).
