JR Hokkaido will start operation of “Akai Hoshi” and “Ao Hoshi” sightseeing trains designed by Mitooka in the spring of 2026. Modified Kiha 143 type.

On April 17, JR Hokkaido announced that the “Akai Hoshi” and “Ao Hoshi” sightseeing trains will begin service in the spring of 2026.

Two trains (four cars each) of the Kiha 143 type, each with a different grade, will be built under the concept of “Encountering new Hokkaido and making the train lines more fun and energetic” so that they can be used as cruise trains for tours around Hokkaido.

The interior and exterior design of the train will be handled by Eiji Mitooka of Dawn Design Institute, who has worked on the JR Kyushu “Nanatsuboshi in Kyushu” and other projects.

The Red Star formation is a luxury class train with a capacity of about 100 passengers. In addition to private rooms, semi-compartments, and box seats, it is equipped with a lounge, a tea room, and an observation room, and is scheduled to operate mainly on the Kushiro Line.

The Blue Star formation is premium class and has a capacity of about 200 passengers. All cars are equipped with an observation room, cargo rack, and large luggage storage space, and are planned to operate mainly on the Furano Line.
