EnjoyWorks has announced a project to revitalize the five capsules of the Nakagin Capsule Tower, which will be demolished in 2022, as lodging facilities.
Nakagin Capsule Tower (Ginza 8-chome, Chuo-ku) is a residential complex designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa in 1972, consisting of 140 capsule-shaped living spaces with symbolic round windows. The building was demolished in 2022 due to aging and other reasons, but 23 of the capsules were preserved and restored as part of the “Nakagin Capsule Tower Building Preservation and Restoration Project” under the supervision of Kisho Kurokawa Architects & Engineers. Five more of these capsules will be reused as accommodations in this project.
Each capsule measures 2.7 x 4.2 x 2.55 m (W x D x H), and the company is currently looking for creators to renovate it. The application period is from April 9 to 30. Entries can be made through a form on the website.
The accommodation facility will be located at “Nagai Umite Park Soleil Hill” (4 Nagai, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture) and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2024.
