The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on March 28 in Dhaka, the capital of the country, for a grant of up to 2,294 million yen for the “Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation Landing Site Improvement Project in Cox’s Bazar District”. Agreement (G/A) for a grant of up to 2,294 million yen for the “Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation Landing Site Development Project in Cox’s Bazar District.
The Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation Fisheries Center, located in Cox’s Bazar District, has a jetty, cargo handling station, and part of the wharf that have collapsed due to riverbank erosion. This has resulted in inefficient unloading operations, as the un-collapsed loading dock must be used for unloading, and the use of contaminated shallow wells and river water poses a sanitation challenge. In addition, since August 2017, the influx of displaced people from neighboring Myanmar to Cox’s Bazar Province has resulted in rising prices of daily commodities, reduced day labor opportunities, and lower wages, and there is a growing need for poverty reduction measures for local residents (host communities) who host displaced people, including small-scale fishermen. The need for poverty alleviation measures for the host community is increasing.
