Background and Objectives
The SDGs QUEST Mirai Koshien was launched in 2019 as a forum for high school students to present and exchange SDG action ideas.
Starting with the Hokkaido and Kansai area competitions in FY 2019, the competition area has been expanded to 11 areas (Hokkaido, South Tohoku, Tokyo metropolitan area, Shizuoka, Tokai, Kansai, Hiroshima, Northern Kyushu, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, and Okinawa) in FY 2022. The number of entries has also increased each time, with a total of 7,255 students from 319 schools participating in FY2023. Ideas for achieving the SDGs are being generated from high school students who are enthusiastic about solving social issues.
JICA has been involved in the Mirai Koshien in the past as a supporting organization and as a member of the executive committee, and this year, in addition to these activities, JICA was also involved in the management of the event as a co-sponsor in Tokyo.
We also offered the “Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Award” in hopes of further increasing interest in the SDGs, JICA and international cooperation among young people, especially high school students.
Contents
At the Final Ceremony, the 12 teams selected as finalists presented their action idea plans. At the award ceremony that followed, the “SDGs QUEST Action Idea Grand Prize”, “Excellence Award”, and three corporate awards including JICA were announced, followed by the presentation of trophies, certificates, and supplementary prizes, comments from the winning teams, and critiques from the executive committee members. The “Grand Prize” went to “Strawberries” from Itsukaichi High School in Tokyo, and the “Excellence Award” went to “Den Den” from Mita Kokusai Gakuen High School in Mihoro, Hokkaido. The team name will be engraved on the signboard of “Youth Future Forest” in Bihoro Town, Hokkaido.
The “Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Award” went to Tokyo Gakugei University International Secondary School for “Daisy Days for kenya” (Plan name: Righteous assistance to distant countries through the purchase of goods). This project involves the production and sale of products made of African fabrics, with all proceeds donated to JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers assigned to the project to help alleviate the problems of street children in Kenya. JICA will continue to support this project, which is carried out in cooperation with JICA’s Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV).
It is inspiring to see how Japanese high school students are becoming more aware of issues and how they are taking action to address social problems as if they were their own. We hope that they will make the most of their experience at the Mirai Koshien in the future.
JICA will continue to work with young people, who will be responsible for the future, to co-create with them through such initiatives.
