Background and Objectives

The year 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of ODA and the 35th anniversary of the opening of the Sudan office. However, Sudan is currently in a state of civil war, and many Sudanese who have fled the civil war are staying in Cairo. In particular, many professors, including the president of the University of Khartoum, are continuing educational activities for students based in Cairo. In this event, JICA introduced ODA projects in the field of healthcare, one of the pillars of JICA’s cooperation, and invited Kumamoto University officials, who have long been in close contact with the University of Khartoum, to Cairo to give a lecture on the latest Japanese pharmaceutical research, aiming at mutual understanding between Japan and Sudan through online exchange. The aim was to promote mutual understanding between Japan and Sudan through online exchanges. A lecture was also given by a member of Rocinantes, a non-profit organization with long experience in cooperation in the field of health in Sudan. By deepening Sudanese people’s understanding of Japan’s ODA through these university officials, we planned to contribute to the promotion of ODA projects as well as to the strengthening of Japan-Sudan relations in the future.

Contents

JICA Sudan office gave an overview of JICA and its health projects in Sudan. Kumamoto University then gave a presentation on its cooperation with the University of Khartoum and its future prospects. Representative Kawahara himself sent out a strong message that he will continue to support Sudan without giving up. Three students from the University of Khartoum took the stage and introduced their past exchange projects with international students and medical volunteer activities in rural areas.

While the unstable situation in Ukraine, Gaza, and other parts of the world continues, and interest in Sudan, which has been in conflict for almost a year, is waning, we were able to gather more than 70 participants from Japan and Sudan, both online and in person, and disseminate information on the occasion of the 35th anniversary, involving universities and NPOs, We were able to disseminate information on the 35th anniversary to both the Japanese and Sudanese sides, while involving universities and NPOs. The event proceeded in an upbeat atmosphere from start to finish, with the Sudanese students nodding their heads and listening intently to the presenters, and spontaneously applauding during the lectures.
