The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Southern Africa Power Pool* on April 2 in Harare, the capital of the Republic of Zimbabwe, on the technical cooperation project “Strengthening Regional Collaboration to Promote the Southern Africa Power Pool. The signing ceremony was held in Harare, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. Signing Ceremony
The Southern Africa region has high renewable energy potential in the form of hydropower, solar and wind power, but renewable energy resources are unevenly distributed and the region as a whole is not fully utilizing renewable energy. In addition, with the future growth of electricity demand in the Southern Africa region, peak demand within the region is projected to reach 85,000 MW by 2040. In order to provide clean and affordable electricity and improve access to electricity over the long term, it is essential to promote the development of renewable energy sources and the integration of electricity distribution within the region.
This project will contribute to the promotion of stable access to clean and affordable electricity in the Southern African region by strengthening the capacity of 12 SAPP member countries’ power utilities to operate wide-area grids and electricity markets through the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP), whose secretariat is located in Zimbabwe. Through this cooperation, we will contribute to SDG Goal 7 (Make energy clean for all), Goal 13 (Take concrete action on climate change), and Goal 17 (Achieve the goals through partnership).
*Southern African Power Pool (SAPP): An organization established to provide a reliable and economical supply of electricity to its member countries, consisting of representatives of power companies in Southern Africa. The 12 member countries are: Republic of Botswana, Republic of Mozambique, Republic of Malawi, Republic of South Africa, Kingdom of Eswatini, Kingdom of Lesotho, Republic of Namibia, Republic of Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Zambia, Republic of Zimbabwe
