Sustainable Cacao Platform in Developing Countries Report on the Achievements of Efforts to Achieve a Sustainable Cacao Industry! | News & Media

Posted on 2024-04-24 by Editor in Chief

This platform was established in January 2020 with the aim of realizing a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable cocoa industry. As a “place” for diverse stakeholders to co-create and collaborate, 62 companies and organization members, including industry associations, food manufacturers, trading companies, NGOs, and consulting companies, and 133 individuals have joined (as of March 2024).

In FY2023, as platform activities, we held study sessions on income improvement for cacao farmers, child labor, and forest conservation, as well as delivery lectures to educational institutions. In March 2024, as its first initiative, the platform conducted a study tour to Ghana, a major cacao producing country, to inspect cacao farms, manufacturing plants, warehouses, and markets, and to exchange opinions with the local government and development partners. The on-site inspection provided a valuable opportunity to see, feel, and understand the country with their own eyes, and to link this to actions from their respective standpoints.

In addition, to inform consumers about the social issues behind chocolate, we held exhibitions and talk events at commercial facilities in Osaka, published a report summarizing the efforts of companies and organizations based on “Sectoral Action for the Elimination of Child Labor,” and created an educational video with celebrities.

Activities by corporate and group members included investigations of child labor risks and sustainable cocoa bean procurement practices by manufacturers, human rights due diligence support to companies by consulting firms, and strengthening of certification systems by NGOs, NPOs, and other organizations.

The platform will promote collaboration among stakeholders to solve issues in the cacao industry and disseminate their activities to contribute to the realization of a sustainable cacao industry.
