Naoki Wakabayashi’s Travel Photo Gallery] Snow Corridor of Shiga-Kusatsu Plateau Route (Gunma Prefecture)

Posted on 2024-05-032024-05-16 by Editor in Chief

When spring arrives, the roads that had been closed during the winter season are cleared of snow and opened to traffic. The Shiga-Kusatsu Plateau route introduced here is one such route, which opens at the end of April, creating snow corridors in deep snow areas. The walls of snow on both sides can be 4 to 7 meters high, making for a spectacular view.

I heard that it is possible to walk there the day before the road opens, so I would like to go there once.

The photo shows the drive from Manza Onsen to the Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen route, through Shiga, and back to Kusatsu. The scenery on the way to and from the mountains with lingering snow looks different on the way to and from Kusatsu. There is a stone monument on this route that marks the highest point of a national highway in Japan (2,172 meters above sea level), and the combination of trees before they sprout and the lingering snow makes for a beautiful landscape. This route is a great driving course during this season.

Access to this place seems to be difficult except by car. It would be easier to join a sightseeing bus tour. If you visit when the snow corridor is open, take warm clothes and enjoy the tour.
